When applying for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), you may receive an email from the consulate indicating an issue with your application. The consulate may raise two common questions:

Question 1: Attachment requirements

Applicable to: During the ETA application review, IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) requests additional documentation.

Key issue: Application materials are incomplete. Supplementary documents (such as scanned passport, travel plan, family information form, etc.) need to be submitted before the specified deadline.

Key requirements:

1. Submissions must be made through the IRCC secure account; email or regular mail are not accepted.

2. Late submission will result in review based solely on existing information and may lead to rejection.

3. Non-English and non-French documents must be accompanied by professional translations.

Question 2: Permanent resident status conflict

Applicable to: Applicants who were or are Canadian permanent residents are ineligible to apply for ETA under the PR category.

Key issue: The conflict between PR (permanent resident) status and ETA eligibility requires a trade-off between the two.

Option A (Waiver PR): Submit a "Voluntary PR Waiver Application" within 10 days. Approved applications will continue ETA review. If not submitted by the deadline, the ETA application will be terminated.

Option B (Keep PR): The ETA application will be withdrawn. You must present a valid PR card or PRTD (Permanent Resident Travel Document) to apply for a new ETA. If your PRTD application is rejected, you cannot reapply for an ETA within 60 days.
